In June 1993, John Wayne Bobbitt drunkenly assaulted his wife, Lorena Bobbitt. After he fell asleep, she took a carving knife from the kitchen, chopped off half his penis, drove away, threw the severed penis into a field, then called 911. Police managed to find the penis in the field, and a surgeon managed to reattach the penis. The Bobbitt case became tabloid fodder for months.
