Tonya Harding was one of the top American figure skaters in the early 90s. In 1991 she won a gold medal at the annual U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She became much more famous for bizarre events at the 1994 U.S. Championships.
Harding and skater Nancy Kerrigan were rivals for the U.S. Championships and the Winter Olympics six weeks later. In January 1994, a hired thug clubbed Kerrigan in the knee at a practice session. The investigation quickly revealed the attack had been planned by Harding, her husband Jeff Gillooly, and her bodyguard Shawn Eckhardt. The case became a tabloid sensation for months. With Kerrigan out of competition, Harding won the 1994 U.S. Championship and a spot on the Olympic team. The Olympic committee sent Kerrigan to the Olympics anyway, where she won a silver medal. Harding was kicked off the Olympic team when her role in the attack came to light, but she sued and won the right to compete. She finished eighth at the Olympics, and later that year was banned for life from figure skating competition.
Harding and Gillooly split up soon afterwards. With the scandal fresh, Gillooly sold their home sex tape to a tabloid TV show. Penthouse published frame enlargements from the Tonya Harding sex tape in its September 1994 issue. The whole tape was released on VHS under the title Tonya and Jeff’s Wedding Night.
The title is misleading. Harding wears (and removes) a wedding dress in the sex tape, but the tape was not actually shot on their wedding night. The wedding dress was a Halloween costume.
